New Directions in New Media

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Well, it’s been what? five, almost six years since I first started podcasting and doing things in the new media space (starting with Linux News Log way back in November of 2004).

I’ve had to take the occasional break simply because life was getting in the way. However, over the years, I’ve managed to grow my activities from one show to five different shows. All of the shows are basically about technology, but focused on a very niche subject, except one show, The Geekinator, which is general geeky tech. I have high hopes for The Geekinator.

I’ve recently taken about a year off from podcasting due to some major health related issues (we’ll not go into that), and that time off has given me an opportunity to spend a great deal of time to think about what I really want to do in the new media space.

During that time, there has been kind of a minor revolution in the podcasting space. A lot of podcasts went from audio only to both audio and video or even exclusively video. There are also a lot of audio only podcasts still out there. Streaming live became a big thing as well. The economy took a major dump and advertising in the new media space changed.

I’ve grown tired of talking about niche subject matter. I want to widen my scope of dialogue and start to incorporate some of the newer things that have been happening in the new media space. I want to do HD, but do a show that really can take advantage of the higher picture resolution that comes with HD. You, the audience may have noticed some experimentation with regards to that going on in my current show line-up. I want to focus a little less on the news and more on the “Hey, that’s really neat!”.

I’ve been blathering on for five paragraphs. Let’s cut to the chase. My show line-up is changing. I’ve already all but retired The Rockinator. It now lives as a sub-category under my main podcast category. I’m going to roll Apple News Log and Microsoft News Log into The Geekinator. I’ve pretty much made all the changes I’m going to to Linux News Log except I want to pull the ogg feed into the same URL schema as Linux News Log currently has. The existing episodes of Apple and Microsoft News Logs will be migrated to their own sub-categories under the main podcast category here at quicksurf.com and the apple.quicksurf.com and microsoft.quicksurf.com sites will at some point go away. I will be doing a re-launch of sorts to The Geekinator with a revised show format.

My reasons for doing this are many fold. First and fore-most, I just don’t have that much free time (or energy) to spend on keeping 5 shows going. Two shows are much easier to manage. Also, I feel that there are other sites out there that are doing Apple and Microsoft related news shows much better than I, and have much larger audiences. If you want really focused news only content, I hope you seek those shows out that are listed on the myriad podcast directories out there. In the meantime, I’ll still be talking about Apple and Microsoft, just in the larger scope of general tech at The Geekinator.

My hope is that you stick around and check out my new show. The first thing you can do is subscribe to the feed at: http://quicksurf.com/?feed=rss2&cat=43 and check out the fourty something Geekinator episodes I’ve already produced. Once I have all the media and show notes from Apple News Log and Microsoft News Log migrated over, I’ll redirect those feeds to the main Geekinator feed.

The timeline for this does not have a schedule, but I hope to have it mostly complete and a new Geekinator show started before the Blogworld and New Media Expo in October. We’ll see how it goes. Until then expect to see lots of changes until I have it how I want it. If you have questions, comments, concerns, or just want to flame the crap out of me, send them to geekinator at quicksurf.com or twitter me @adrian_bacon.

It’s been a great ride, but now I want to do something a little different. I hope you come along for the new ride.
